Gas turbine is a kind of internal combustion power machine, which uses continuous flow gas as working medium to drive the impeller to rotate at high speed and change the energy of fuel into useful work. The structure of gas turbine is the simplest, and it can embody a series of advantages, such as small volume, light weight, fast start-up, less or no cooling water.


In the main flow of air and gas, the gas turbine cycle consists of compressor, combustor and gas turbine, which is called simple cycle. Most gas turbines use simple cycle.


The compressor sucks air from the outside atmosphere and compresses it step by step through an axial-flow compressor to make it pressurized, and the air temperature increases accordingly; the compressed air is pressed into the combustor and mixed with the fuel injected into it to produce high temperature and high pressure gas; then it enters the turbine to expand and do work to impel the turbine to drive the compressor. With the external load rotor rotating at high speed, the chemical energy of gas or liquid fuel can be partly converted into mechanical power and output electrical power. The exhaust gas discharged from the turbine is discharged to the atmosphere for natural heat release. In this way, the gas turbine converts the chemical energy of the fuel into thermal energy, and part of the thermal energy into mechanical energy. Usually in a gas turbine, the compressor is driven by the expansion of the gas turbine, which is the load of the turbine. In a simple cycle, about one-third to two-thirds of the mechanical power generated by the turbine is used to drive the compressor, and about one-third of the rest is used to drive the generator. When starting a gas turbine, the external power is needed first, usually the starter drives the compressor. Until the mechanical power generated by the gas turbine is greater than the mechanical power consumed by the compressor, the external starter trips off and the gas turbine can work independently.
